In 1991, during a regular meeting of the Guild of Independent Winemakers Cape Malan family presented an unusual wine, named after the founder of the economy Frans Malan – a tribute to the great patriarch, demonstrates a new approach to winemaking. “I am very pleased to see that my father’s pioneering spirit continues to live and gain more recognition, because what started as a risky experiment with Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1991, has turned into a real pearl of our portfolio, “- says Johan Malan, owner of Simonsig.
The uniqueness of the wine “Frans Malan” lies in its blend consisting of grape varieties Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Wine, fully reflects the characteristics of the terroir of South Africa, was a resounding success, confirmed by four double gold and ten gold medals.
2010 harvest was the lowest in many years, but the berries were very high quality, with a concentrated flavor and aroma. Wine soaked for 17 months in barrels of French (35%) and American (65%) of white oak. At the same time 92% of the barrels were new. The wine can be drunk now or stored 5-8 years after bottling.
“Frans Malan” in 2010 received double gold medal at the competition “Veritas, 2013,” the silver medal at the competition “International Wine & Spirit Competition” in 2013.
Simonsig wine estate owner, located in the northwestern part of Stellenbosch, is family Malan. The estate noble grape varieties are cultivated and produced some of the best wines of South Africa.
