Description
The vineyard of the Mega Spileo monastery, located above the gorge at an altitude of 800 meters in the Kalavryta area, was already known in 1550. The building of the winery was located directly on the vineyard. Here the monks made wine, after which it was transported on mules in Mega Spileo, to the famous cellar, where it was kept in 500-liter barrels. In the late 1980s, the cultivation of the vineyard ceased because of the gradual departure of monks from the monastery of Mega Spileo. In 1999, Janis and Theodoros Anastasius, the shareholders of the company Cavino, engaged in the restoration of an abandoned vineyard and took it on a long-term lease. From the obtained crops, the wines “Domain Mega Spileo” and “Mega Spileo” were made.
Raspberry dry wine “Mega Spileo” III Cuvee is produced from the blend of autochthonous and international grape varieties: Mavrodafne, Cabernet Sauvignon and Agiorgitico, grown on small plots in the mountains of Achaea, at an altitude of 800 meters above the sea. Harvest is collected manually in mid-October. After maceration and fermentation, the wine is aged for 9 months in barrels of French and American oak, and then 24 months in bottles. “Mega Spileo” III Cuve is recommended to drink young or store for 5 years.
